Canning season: how ordering ahead works
When the tomatoes come on they come on all at once. Here is how to make sure yours are set aside.
Every August the same thing happens. The tomatoes come on, the dill cukes come on, and for about three weeks the phone does not stop. People want twenty pounds, forty pounds, a bucket of cukes and a bundle of dill, and they want it on Saturday because that is when the canning happens.
We can do that. But we cannot promise it to someone who turns up at four on a Saturday afternoon, because by then the table is mostly bare.
What to do
Call or use the order form on the vegetables page by Tuesday night. Tell us roughly what you need in pounds. We will call back the same night with the total and what we can fill that week, and it will be picked that morning and waiting for you Thursday.
What to bring
Bring your own buckets. A five gallon pail holds about twenty pounds of tomatoes. If you forget, we usually have something.
Prices this year
Field tomatoes $1.25 a pound, or $1 if you pick them yourself. Dill cukes $2.50 a pound. Dill weed $3 a bundle. The whole list is on the vegetables page.
